This is my proposed itinerary, updated on 27 January 2011.
I’m flying from IAD (Dulles International Airport, Washington DC) to ADD (Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa) on Saturday, 13 March 2010. I will fly back home to the US on 1 May 2011.
March 2010: Ethiopia (Bahir Dar, Lake Tana, Gorgora, Gondar, Dessie)
April 2010: Ethiopia (Tigray)
May 2010: Ethiopia (Dire Dawa, Harar); Djibouti (side trip)
June 2010: Ethiopia (western and southern); onward to Kenya
July 2010: Kenya
August 2010: Uganda
September 2010: Tanzania (inc. Zanzibar)
October/November/December 2010, January 2011: Egypt
January/February/March/April 2011: Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal
I plan to travel overland through Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania (I originally thought I might try the overland route from Ethiopia to Kenya as well, but decided not do so), and then fly to Egypt.
In January 2011, I will fly to Togo and then travel overland through Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal, eventually flying home from Dakar to finish my trip.

Chris, Now this is what I call an adventure. Can’t wait to follow your progress. All the best and hope you have a great time. Rob

Thanks, Rob! I can’t wait to get going. I need to do this before I get too old… I’ll turn 40 in Uganda if I stick to this schedule. Africa has captured my imagination, and I’m really looking forward to seeing as much as I can.
